Wolf Blitzer Asks Tornado Survivor If She Thanked the Lord; Tells Him She’s an Atheist

There was a moment of levity in Oklahoma Tuesday when CNN host Wolf Blitzer, concluding an interview with a woman named Rebecca and her 19-month-old son Anders who survived the devastating tornado, asked her if she thanked the Lord for a decision that saved her life.

“I’m actually an atheist,” she replied, laughing.

She added she wouldn’t blame other people for thanking the Lord, though.

Rebecca said she decided to leave her house with Anders, a fateful move as it was later destroyed by the tornado. She returned after it hit to see her husband Brian searching the remains of the home for her and their son, leading to a tearful reunion.

I heard about this story this morning, and I love seeing this. I have to say that her awkwardness in being asked the question was obvious, but she was honest and spoke how she truly feels. That is brave, so often Atheists put in to that situation will simply go along with what is being said to not rock the boat. Bravo to this woman!

This machine allows anyone to work for minimum wage for as long as they like. Turning the crank on the side releases one penny every 4.97 seconds, for a total of $7.25 per hour. This corresponds to minimum wage for a person in New York. This piece is brilliant on multiple levels, particularly as social commentary. Without a doubt, most people who started operating the machine for fun would quickly grow disheartened and stop when realizing just how little they’re earning by turning this mindless crank. A person would then conceivably realize that this is what nearly two million people in the United States do every day…at much harder jobs than turning a crank. This turns the piece into a simple, yet effective argument for raising the minimum wage.

You use algebra all the time. There is no reason why you should get into long compicated answers for this question. Here are some straight up easy answers.

1) When filling your car up with gas you can use a form of algebra. Lets say you only have $20.00 to spend on gas today and gas is $3.50 a gallon. How many gallons could you buy?

Let x = # of gallons of gas

3.50x=20.00
x=5.71 gallons

2) Lets say you need to buy a NEW XBox 360. You have $800 to spend on everything. You know a new system costs $400 and extra controller $40. Assuming a game costs $60 how many games could you get?

Let x= the number of Games

$800 = $400 + $40 +$60x
800=460+60x
360=60x
x = 6 Games

3) For the last one lets say you are all grown up now and have to move across country for a new job. Lets use Buffalo, NY to Sacramento, CA which is roughly 2500 miles of driving. How much money do you need to save for gas if the national average is $3.23/gallon.

Let x = amount of money you need to save

2500 = 3.23x
x=$773.99

Also, pretty much everything in the world works because someone did the math to make it work.
I never thought I would need a higher math, all through high school, through my one year at uni, up until just two years ago.

A recent instructor I had changed my total perception on math. He explained all of the “whys” and “hows” and that math is an the functioning art of the world around us. He went on to say that school teaches math backwards, as if to teach kids about music, you started off teaching them about theory and sheet music without ever letting them hear a note played.

Also, if you’ve read this far, if you ever ask your teacher in what situation a certain equation would be applied, and they can’t answer your question, then they are the problem of dullness in math education.
